March 6, 2024

The law firm of Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP is pleased to announce that Hinshaw partner Daniel (D.L.) Morriss and associate Mohamed Sweify have been elected to serve as officers of the New York State Bar Association (NYSBA) International Section. Morriss will serve as Secretary, effective from June 2024 through July 2025. Sweify will serve as Chair of the NYSBA International Section's Egypt Chapter for the same duration.

Morriss has served as the NYSBA International Section's Diversity Officer since 2020. Sweify has served as Chair of the NYSBA International Dispute Resolution Committee and as an Executive Member of the Dispute Resolution Section since 2021. He was also involved in the NYSBA's Task Force on New York Law in International Matters from 2021 – 2022.

The NYSBA's International Section is a large global network of legal professionals committed to advancing the rule of law, creating a strong community of lawyers around the world, and promoting legal education. The Section comprises over 70 chapters worldwide and offers opportunities to participate in webinars, conferences, and in-person events. The Section is dedicated to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and has amended its by-laws to prioritize DEI and establish numerical targets.

Morriss concentrates his practice on the representation and defense of regional and nationwide financial institutions in commercial litigation claims involving tort, contract, and statutory violations involving complex commercial foreclosure, guaranty, and loan liability actions, as well as post-judgment collections. He has also handled matters involving UCC litigation, contract disputes, bankruptcy, and creditors' rights. D.L. also regularly represents companies in general litigation matters, such as commercial landlords and tenants in property management disputes and corporations facing internal management disputes as well as contract and tort claims.

In addition to his practice as a commercial litigator, Morriss manages the firm's cultural initiatives and affinity groups and leads the firmwide Diversity Committee. As Hinshaw's DEI Partner, he oversees the recruitment, retention, talent development, and advancement of diverse attorneys and supports networking and leadership opportunities. Morriss had a strategic role in Hinshaw's Diversity Lab's Mansfield 5.0 certification achievement and is actively involved in the firm's participation in Mansfield Rule 6.0.

Mohamed F. Sweify is a bilingual dual-qualified attorney with experience counseling, arbitrating, and litigating complex commercial and investment disputes. He has handled cross-border disputes under major arbitration rules, including commercial, investment, telecommunication, partnership, and shareholder disputes, oil and gas, construction, Islamic finance, and white-collar crime investigations. Through his practice of being versed in civil and common law jurisdictions, Mohamed has handled international disputes before arbitral tribunals seated in different jurisdictions and before arbitrators with diverse backgrounds. He also has had prosecutorial experience in Egypt, where he handled governmental corruption and financial crimes investigations. He is also an adjunct professor at Fordham Law School.

In 2023, Mohamed was appointed as a member of the CPR’s Y-ADR Steering Committee.  In 2022, he was appointed by the International Chamber of Commerce ( “ICC”) as a delegate for the ICC Commission on Arbitration and ADR, which contributes to the global development of the arbitration and ADR practice. That same year, Mohamed was awarded the Africa's 30 Most Promising Arbitration Practitioners Award. In addition, Mohamed is a Fellow at the Chartered Institute of International Arbitrators and is currently the youngest accredited arbitrator at the American Arbitration Association. He currently serves as the Chair of the International Dispute Resolution Committee at the New York State Bar Association. In 2021, Mohamed was awarded the Middle East Policy Center (MEPC) 40 Under 40 Award due to the impact he brings to boosting the relationship between the U.S. and the Middle East.
